An Introduction to Phlebotomy (6 hr Theoretical Course)

An Introduction to Phlebotomy is a theory-based continuing education and professional development course designed for healthcare workers and learners who have previously received practical phlebotomy instruction, supervised workplace training, or hands-on experience performing blood collection. The course provides a comprehensive theoretical refresher and modern-practice update in blood components and vessel anatomy, patient identification, hand hygiene and glove use, infection prevention, vein and site selection, venipuncture, capillary collection, blood collection tubes and additives, order of draw, specimen integrity, complications, needle stick prevention, butterfly/winged blood collection sets, and modern safety-engineered retractable or shielding needle systems. This course may be useful for medical office assistants who have been trained to perform blood collection in the workplace but who may not have completed a formal stand-alone phlebotomy course.
