Course Description

In this course students will learn to:

• Recognize the importance of self-determination in health care;
• Identify the legal requirements of obtaining informed consents;
• Identify the legislative acts governing the obtaining of informed consent;
• Discuss the different types of consents. Understand the elements of capacity to consent;
• Identify the role of the nurse as it relates to informed consent by clients;
• Describe the purpose of the Code of Ethics;
• Describe the Principles of Health Care Ethics;
• Identify nursing values and ethical responsibilities as they pertain to the Code of Ethics;
• Identify the participants involved in ethical issues and decision making; and
• Discuss the ethical endeavours the nurse must strive towards under the Code of Ethics.
